The Internet of Things (IoT) connects a variety of devices that are used throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). While there are challenges with embracing IoT, the new 5G environment can completely transform the mission for the DoD.

From enabling the warfighter with automation to enhancing smart base integration, and more, mobile-edge computing powered by 5G can enable the Hyper-Enabled Operator with IoT, and solve current DoD connectivity pain points.

These were the key themes in this first installment of our 5G Use Cases for the DOD podcast, hosted on Government Technology Insider, where we were joined by Bryan Schromsky, Managing Partner, 5G Public Sector with Verizon; and Mike Helfrich, Founder and CEO of Blueforce Development; who discussed this topic further.

“When it comes to the Internet of Things and the DoD, some of the challenges that we see are basic connectivity as the military moves to a more connected world, not only to connect the warfighter with different sensors, but also to sensors within the base and military equipment,” said Schromsky. “And with different manufacturers and various types of sensors, the DoD is looking for a baseline connectivity to collect all this data from different places. That’s where we see 5G coming into play – having a common interface and connectivity that provides the scale and speed that the DoD requires.”
