Over the past two and half years, the IT environment for the federal government has experienced many rapid and fundamental changes. Gone are the days of on-prem security solutions centered around an office, instead hybrid-work has taken over as the primary form of the workplace and brought a whole new set of security concerns on top of older ones. These threats loomed large over the future of Federal IT, however many were working to address them. These and more were explored in a recent video series presented by CTG Federal and Cisco.
During this transition, many IT professionals at the federal level went through herculean efforts to not only enable the future of work but to combat some of the most significant and high-profile cybersecurity events in the history of the US Federal Government. Coupled with the unprecedented wave of modernization, these attacks raised awareness of the many ways that the future of Federal IT could be improved to enable hybrid work safely.
In response, numerous transformational federal memos have been released, including White House Executive Order 14028, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) M 22-09, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-53A Rev. 5. Each memo lays out a groundwork for Federal Agencies to follow to not only enable hybrid-work but to do so securely. However, these memos also included rigorous proof of performance schedules, significant funding, and high levels of political visibility.
All in total, the combination of rapid modernization as a need, high-level memos with increased visibility, and increased intrusion and hacking attempts have resulted in a Federal IT landscape with a fatalistic mentality. However, this should not be the case.
Among the many innovations honed during this digital transformation was the concept of Multi-Domain Architecture. Created as a means to marry the collaborative and security needs of the Federal IT environment with the legal requirements set forth by countless memos, this solution offers the potential for a highly customizable and secure workplace for the future of Federal IT.
Government Technology Insider will cover the benefits of Multi-Domain Architecture and what it means for Federal IT professionals throughout this series, from the basic tenants and how to enable it, but also how it fits into the overarching transformation still impacting the future of Federal IT today.
