While many agencies have relied on industry partners for years, those relationships were tested in the face of crisis in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe in early March of last year, public sector agencies were scrambling to continue mission delivery, keep constituents informed, and protect the health of their employees. With the help of trusted industry partners, agencies were able to deliver on these focuses by implementing agile, innovative solutions that went beyond technology.
“At the start of the COVID pandemic every government and state agency had a need to support personnel working in a hybrid model whether at home, in an office, or another remote location,” said Ray Bauer, Director of Public Sector Domain Specialists, Verizon. “Agencies looked to partners who could quickly assess the situation and were able to provide the necessary building blocks and additional services needed to support business outcomes. Workers were enabled to accomplish their work tasks using wireless and wireline networks coupled with the devices, infrastructure, managed services, and security required for mission-critical success.”
Without a trusted industry partner that offered a full suite of options, agencies struggled to transition to hybrid work and continue mission delivery. Although many agencies had the building blocks their networks needed to adapt, they didn’t know where to begin with cloud-based solutions, security-focused measures, and cost control. “With a managed service provider, agencies were able to select a set of solutions that already had the security and compliance wrapped in and also remain cost-effective,” shared Bauer.
“One large Eastern state needed to rapidly enable workers which normally reported to an agency office each day. We were able to provide devices, flexible data rate plans, internet connectivity, collaboration tools, and integrated office-like features for hunt groups, and voicemail,” explained Bauer. “In addition to enabling the remote worker, we were able to offer a Security Risk Assessment to review the state’s applications, systems, processes, data flows, and policies to determine the level of risks and vulnerabilities in order to prioritize mitigation methods which would protect the agency, citizen data, and work seamlessly with the network and technology to provide secure remote access and application enablement.”
With the help of industry partners that brought expertise and technology, public sector agencies were able to continue mission delivery – from almost anywhere. While the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the need for better technology solutions, there is still much to be done.
