The NGEN Service Management, Integration, and Transport contract (NGEN-SMIT) contract will transform and modernize the Department of the Navy’s (DON) network. Awarded to Leidos by the Department of the Navy, NGEN-SMIT is an “umbrella” contract that provides secure end-to-end IT services for supporting 670,000 daily users of the Navy and Marine Corps’ Intranet, the OCONUS Naval Enterprise Network, and the Marine Corps Enterprise Network for daily IT services. With increased service management, service integration, and transport services, NGEN-SMIT will advance Naval capabilities and support their mission.

This digital modernization effort is being supported by a partnership between Leidos and Verizon to deliver unified communications and transport services for transforming the Navy’s network.

A key part of the effort will be a flexible and agile enterprise network for improving mission readiness for the Navy and Marine Corps. Much of this will be achieved by supporting networking capabilities at the edge in denied disrupted intermittent and limited (DDIL) environments for providing access to critical intelligence for decision-making.

These were some of the key insights of the Government Technology Insider “Driving Digital Modernization: How the Navy and Marine Corps Will Benefit from NGEN-SMIT,” podcast with Chris Perry, Director of Transformation, NGEN-SMIT at Leidos; and Reece Morgan, ONE-Net Program Manager at Verizon.

“This is the first time in over two decades that the Navy’s major networks have been brought together under a single contract to modernize, transform and converge capabilities into the future Naval enterprise network,” said Perry. “The end goal for the Navy is to have a flexible and agile enterprise network that is more efficient and can meet the future needs of sailors, Marines and civilian professionals.”
