In the realm of military training, the key to force readiness lies in the accuracy and realism of scenarios. As warfare and defense tactics continue to evolve, there‘s an urgent demand for innovation in the way in which warfighters are prepared for the life and death situations they may encounter. Modern-day warfighters require training experiences that seamlessly merge reality into simulations, enabling soldiers to refine their skills with unparalleled precision, while commanders execute operations with unparalleled accuracy. This isn’t the stuff of science fiction or the distant future; it’s the remarkable evolution of the next-generation military training. This transformation is happening right now, and it is made possible by the dynamic synergy of 5G technology and advanced connectivity.
The Evolution of Military Training
Military training methods have undergone significant transformations over the years, supporting existing challenges and adapting to new ones. Brad Galego, Distinguished System Architect, Verizon, explained in an interview with Government Technology Insider that the military branches are moving towards a concept called “live virtual constructive” (LVC) training. LVC training combines live, virtual, and constructive elements into a single environment to minimize logistics and maximize training effectiveness. The Army, for example, has fielded its Live, Virtual, Constructive Integrating Architecture (LVC-IA) to 11 installations since 2012. In March 2023, as part of Project Tripoli, the U.S. Marine Corps issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking technology solutions to enhance its LVC training continuum from potential vendors.
“The aim for training is to employ the maximum number of multi-domain forces, incorporating air, sea, land, and cyberspace,” Galego said. It is not practical, not to mention within budget, to have large scale, real-world exercises all the time. This is where LVC comes into play, and for LVC training to be the most effective, Galego emphasized the military’s need for reliable, high-bandwidth, high-density communications. “With an influx of troops in the field, monitoring their positions, ensuring their health and safety, and meticulously collecting and tracking data all become paramount,” Galego explained.
Despite the promising direction LVC training takes, Doug Shock, DMTS DoD Private 5G Product Development at Verizon, pointed out some persistent challenges that demand attention. “Chief among these hurdles,” Shock noted, “is the scarcity of available spectrum. Additionally, the absence of a centralized data collection point poses difficulties in gathering and analyzing precise information, hindering the achievement of necessary training levels on current platforms.” 5G provides the low latency, high device density, and throughput required for effective training today.
Realistic Training Scenarios with 5G
A key advantage of the transformation of military training enabled by LVC and 5G is the ability to create highly realistic training scenarios. By harnessing the capabilities of private 5G networks, military units can immerse themselves in training exercises that mirror genuine combat situations with remarkable fidelity and accuracy. Shock underlined the mechanics behind this realism, outlining how the technology precisely tracks the warfighter’s movements, monitors their physiological responses, and assesses the efficacy of their shots.
5G technology opens the door to more immersive and nuanced training scenarios. Beyond basic skills, it allows for AI-driven autonomy, enhancing the warfighter’s adaptability and readiness. This depth of data not only improves training and evaluation but also equips military leaders with invaluable insights. “They can then translate that information into a battle situation. Using that training and intel, they can adjust future training to fit each warfighter, no longer taking a one-size fits all approach on training,” Shock added. The rich data generated in these realistic training scenarios is not only crucial for improving individual soldier’s skills, but it also plays a vital role in training and fine-tuning future AI systems. These AI systems will be central to military operations, ensuring the seamless synergy of human and AI capabilities on the battlefield.
The integration of 5G technology bolsters situational awareness and command control. Leaders can operate from a unified command platform, visualizing multiple theaters of action, and orchestrating strategies in real-time. This command-and-control capability is indispensable in today’s multi-domain military landscape, where swift, informed decisions can be the difference between success and failure, and ultimately life and death.
Cost Savings and Future Developments
Aside from its many readiness advantages, 5G technology also offers cost-saving benefits. Not only is 5G integration on its way to being compatible with readily available, commercial devices, its reduced reliance on live ammunition and the ability to tailor training exercises with precision, resulting in more streamlined resource allocation. For instance, programs like the Army’s I-MILES (Instrumentable-Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System), which was established in the 1970s, are costly and not very accurate. With 5G technology, real rounds can be simulated with a high level of precision, providing valuable training data. This is in contrast to replication by a laser that Shock described as able to be interfered with by factors such as fog, rain, or snow that will deflect the laser signal.
The innovations and advancements occurring now in training, are helping to ensure the U.S. military remains at the forefront of readiness and effectiveness. As Brad Galego aptly put it, “If you design a system exclusively for current needs, it’s unlikely to possess the adaptability and flexibility to meet future requirements. From an infrastructure perspective, we’re working with a forward-looking approach, envisioning what will be needed to support next generation capabilities.”
Empowering the Future
5G technology is delivering next-generation military training today. Beyond the battlefield, 5G enables precision, cost-effective training, individualized skill development, and a centralized view of military operations. As 5G technology continues to advance, military training will evolve, ensuring that U.S. Armed Forces are well-prepared to protect the nation and respond to ever-changing threats.
