Periods of uncertainty have always tested government resilience. And in the wake of the longest government shutdown in history, the public sector faces an even sharper need for connection, collaboration, and innovation. Leaders are being asked to do more with less, maintaining continuity of the mission, delivering vital services, and building trust with citizens—even when resources are stretched thin. This strain underscores the importance of events like Appian Government 2025, taking place November 20 in Tysons, Virginia. The annual event brings together federal, state, and local government leaders who are driving transformation through technology, providing a forum to share ideas and explore practical solutions for the future of digital government.

Where Policy, People, and Technology Meet

Events like this are where policymakers, program managers, and IT innovators come together to explore how AI and process automation can help government do what it does best: serve. “Engagement right now is higher than I’ve ever seen it,” said Matt Chong, SVP at Appian and presenter at Appian Government 2025. “Customers want to understand how industry can help solve their biggest problems while bringing value, especially at speed. Curated, highly tailored events are incredibly important because they connect those needs directly with the right expertise and solutions.”

From Buzz to Real-World Impact

AI has been around for years, but what’s different now, according to Chong, is that it’s moving from potential to proof. “AI isn’t new. What’s changed is the rate of adoption, especially over the past few years, and how it’s being used today. Agencies are realizing they can’t sit back and watch anymore. They need to take note, test, and act fast.”

The sense of urgency is well-founded. A recent MIT study found that 95 percent of GenAI pilots fail  because organizations try to avoid the constraints of governance, memory, and workflow redesign.

Chong explained that many of these AI projects fail because of mismatched data or unclear objectives. “AI success depends on context,” he said. “We call it moving from ‘hype AI’ to ‘real AI,’” Chong said. “It’s not about shiny tools; It’s about using AI where it matters most—inside real processes that deliver outcomes agencies can measure.” By embedding AI directly into operational workflows, it can deliver reliable, scalable, mission-critical results.

AI That’s Secure, Private, and Built for Government

For the public sector, innovation must never come at the expense of accountability or security. At Appian Government 2025, attendees will hear directly from agencies already applying AI and other innovative technologies to streamline mission support services, reduce manual effort, and modernize operations.

An example comes from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), which must collect and validate data from thousands of transit agencies each year to determine federal funding levels. Historically, this process relied heavily on manual reviews and legacy systems, an enormous burden for analysts, and a risk to data accuracy. “We understand FTA’s data needs and created a purpose-built team to help the agency transform critical programs,” said Mark Lee, ICF senior vice president and public sector lead. By adopting a unified digital system that brings previously disconnected data streams together, FTA now analyzes information more quickly, reduces inconsistencies, and improves the transparency and reliability of decisions that ultimately determine how transit dollars flow nationwide. This kind of mission-focused modernization is exactly the type of progress leaders will explore at Appian Government 2025.

Partnership as a Catalyst for Innovation

Another key message for 2025 is collaboration. Government leaders don’t have to navigate modernization alone. In times of constraint, the fastest path to innovation is often partnership. “Don’t be afraid of the innovation that’s happening across industry,” Chong advised. “Partnering with trusted technology providers is one of the fastest ways to solve major challenges and accelerate transformation.”

Appian Government 2025 serves as a bridge between agencies, experts, and technology partners, connecting people who are solving similar problems in different ways, with different resources. It’s a chance to exchange ideas, showcase proven solutions, and leave with new perspectives that can drive tangible progress, even amid fiscal pressure and operational disruptions.

Modernization that Matters

From AI and automations to low-code development and data fabric, the innovations showcased at Appian Government 2025 share the same goal of making government faster, smarter, and more resilient. As agencies continue to modernize and rebuild momentum after the shutdown, events like Appian Government offer a forum for leaders to reset, refocus and above all, reignite their missions. “Our focus is always on how AI and automation can deliver real results, not just new ideas,” Chong said. “When agencies can see that in action, they realize modernization doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be mission-driven.”

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) shares this mindset. Adarryl Roberts, Chief Information Officer of DLA, shared, “We’re not looking at the technology itself. We’re really saying, let’s define the problems our agencies are looking to solve, and through that life cycle management of technology, where is AI applicable? Where is automation applicable?”

A Future-Ready Government Starts Here

The challenges facing government today are complex, but the mission remains clear. Agencies must continue delivering consistent, reliable services to the public, no matter the circumstances. Events like Appian Government 2025 remind us that innovation and mission success are deeply connected instead of opposing goals. And in moments of uncertainty, these connections matter more than ever.
