The Department of Defense is leading the way when it comes to digital transformation and its leadership is inspiring the public sector, especially when it comes to 5G implementation and use cases. 5G is enabling innovation with solutions on smart bases, powering connectivity, and automating the warfighter. With increased capabilities, the DoD, and eventually all federal agencies, will be able to deliver on the mission more effectively than ever before.

Creating the Smart Base of the Future with 5G

In partnership with the DoD, agencies are driving innovation to create the smart base of the future. While 4G LTE networks will provide the backbone of bases, 5G will enable the high-speed and low-latency capabilities needed on the bases to drive mission success. At the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, 5G Ultra Wideband has been deployed on a military installation. 5G Ultra Wideband is enabling several use cases, such as energy management, drone management, and autonomous vehicles. With increased technology abilities, “the DoD is beginning to test AR/ VR, machine learning, unmanned aerial vehicles and high-speed video” at these bases, said Bryan Schromsky, Managing Partner, 5G Public Sector with Verizon.

The 5G Living Lab Collaboration Helps Drive Success for the Marine Corps and Private Sector Partners

5G is creating new opportunities and increasing capabilities across the public sector. The 5G Living Lab at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, is a “collaboration between the Department of Defense and commercial partners to deliver on cutting edge solutions for our men and women in uniform,” said Andrés Irlando, President of Verizon Public Sector. Here, agencies are learning the ways in which 5G will disrupt the industry and transform for the better. 5G-enabled solutions will continue to grow and enhance how the military will perform its duties and drive operations.
