One major effect of digital transformation is the move from centralized data capture, storage and analytics to wherever the user happens to be. A driving force in this “edge computing” model is 5G wireless technology.

But “wireless” will mean much more than cell phones, according to Steve LeFrancois, CTO of Verizon’s Public Sector group. For the Government Technology Insider podcast, he pointed to a 5G future with remote sensors, connected vehicles, IoT devices and video technologies supporting public safety – a future that’s being built right now.

“Having the right kind of organizational constructs in place allows agencies to operate at the speed of mission.”

While this can open up tremendous opportunities, it also brings with it a number of risks, not the least of which is security. But the real limiting factor for agencies lies elsewhere, he explained.

To find out more about how to tackle these challenges, and to hear Steve’s answer to, “Do we even know what questions to ask?” about how 5G will change the tech landscape, click below.
