Improving cybersecurity measures is no longer just an option for federal agencies. With new, more complex cyber attacks being developed every day, it’s imperative that government entities stay ahead of the technological curve when it comes to securing sensitive government data, hence the federal adoption of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Special Publication 800-53 Revision 5 (NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5).

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 puts the framework in place for next-generation privacy and security controls for federal entities. As more and more non-federal entities adopt NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, NIST is making the controls catalogue more adaptable and user-friendly, while also simplifying the document to maximize adoption.

Private sector involvement with this development has been crucial to improving the inner workings and operability of this system for federal agencies.
