While government agencies don’t work on a calendar year when it comes to budgeting, the start of a new year is always a good time to take a step back, evaluate progress in the current budget cycle and start some longer term planning for what comes next for your agency. Recently, we shared a checklist of activities that CIOs and government IT leaders can use to chart their course towards using IT to spur innovation and help the agency streamline delivery of services and meet their missions.
As a follow-up to that adoption checklist, Anthony Robbins, Vice President of Federal at Brocade also shared with us some of his key tips on how to think about directing budget to support the pathway to innovation. Right now, Robbins points out that 70 percent of IT budgets for most federal agencies are directed towards maintenance and support of legacy infrastructure, meaning that there is little room in the budget for investment in new technologies that will drive efficiencies in service delivery.
