Given the massive impact of 5G on federal operations now and in the future, it makes sense for federal agencies focused on infrastructure and technology to make concerted efforts in preparing other federal organizations for the transformation. For example, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has put forth a 5G hub of sorts, offering valuable information about reliable 5G, its capabilities, and how to ensure its security and resiliency as it becomes more widely adopted.
As part of this effort, CISA created an entire series titled “Security Guidance for 5G Cloud Infrastructure” that’s focused on security guidelines for agencies and technology providers to utilize as they formulate their 5G strategies moving forward. In Part IV of this series, which was released in December 2021, the focus is on ensuring the integrity of cloud infrastructure and mitigating cyber threats at the design phase of these initiatives.
“5G networks, which are cloud-native, will be a lucrative target for cyber threat actors who wish to deny or degrade network resources or otherwise compromise information,” the piece noted. “To counter this threat, it is imperative that 5G cloud infrastructures be built and configured securely, with capabilities in place to detect and respond to threats, providing a hardened environment for deploying secure network functions. It is also important that 5G network functions be implemented using security best practices.”
These are some of the crucial elements that federal agencies need to keep in mind as they select their technology partners in their journey to 5G connectivity, and the cloud in general.
