GTI NEWS ROUNDUP: Using Advanced Technologies Rooted in Resilience to Build Better Security Operations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With 2020 just beginning, we’re gathering the most compelling stories according to our readers. This past year our readers were most interested in understanding how weapons systems are made stronger by being rooted in resilience, using advanced analytics to prevent cyberattacks, and utilizing Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools to bolster security operations. In retrospect, GTI readers wanted to know more about the role of advanced technology in creating resilient and strong government security systems. Continue reading to learn more about the biggest stories of 2019.

SECURING WEAPON SYSTEMS WITH A FOCUS ON RESILIENCE

Because today’s military platforms and weapons systems are primarily software and network-enabled these systems more vulnerable to cyberattacks. While these threats and attacks can be challenged by adding technologies to help make them more secure, the way to truly build a lasting defense system is through resilience. Rather than hoping that a cybersecurity breach will never happen, “the military needs to look at their weapon systems and identify ways in which they can still function even if a cyberattack is successful. They need to identify how they can make these systems cyber resilient – capable of withstanding a successful attack and still functioning for the warfighter.”

HOW ADVANCED ANALYTICS CAN HELP THE MILITARY BETTER PLAN FOR CYBERATTACKS

It’s easily understood that cyber risks and cyberattacks have the potential to completely derail mission assurance and mission success. The key to negate this isn’t by using the “expert judgement” process. Instead, the key is in the adoption and application of new, advanced technologies. By using advanced analytics, “senior military leaders will have the ability to effectively “turn the knobs” and ask “what if” questions about their mission planning and infrastructure. [Utilizing advanced tools including predictive analytics], they can eliminate a subsystem and see what the impact would be to the larger system.”

THE ROLE OF SIEM TOOLS IN YOUR IT SECURITY OPERATIONS

Unfortunately, there isn’t one single, magical solution that protects against all cyber risks. However, industry experts have learned that tools including Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) software are useful in managing the cyberthreat landscape to further reduce risk. “SIEM tools combine Security Information Management (SIM) with Security Event Management (SEM) capabilities into a single solution with the intent of delivering comprehensive threat detection, incident response, and compliance reporting capabilities. Through the use of SIEM tools, government agencies can save time and provide additional security.
