In 2018 alone, the federal government is projected to spend $96 billion in IT solutions, according to Govtech Navigator. A recent study by Gartner, found that sixteen percent of government CIOs plan to increase spending on analytics platforms followed by six percent on data management. Digital transformation was listed as the top business priority for CIOs followed by security and governance. Digital transformation also appeared in the recent GTI Federal Focus Report as the top IT trend of interest among federal civilian agencies.

“Digital transformation revolves around data. To be successful, public sector CIOs need to focus on expanding their data and analytics capabilities and creating a data-centric culture, by increasing the availability of open data and APIs for internal use and public consumption,” said Rick Howard, research vice president at Gartner. “Building out data analytics infrastructure is fundamental to improving government program outcomes and services to citizens.”

Platforms like Solarwinds Orion, can help agencies visualize, monitor, and analyze the performance of their applications, systems, and networks both on-premises or in the cloud. IT monitoring software allows CIOs to unify their IT environment, bringing visibility to all elements of service. Operational efficiency is improved by correlating data across the IT stack reducing monitoring efforts. Consolidation is another benefit of IT monitoring software that merges platforms to one vendor so end-to-end IT visibility is clear.

Orion works as a network performance analyzer, network traffic analyzer, network configuration manager, virtualization manager, server and application monitor, and storage resource monitor, combining all critical systems. As these systems grow, automation becomes integral to reduce errors and lower costs. While digital transformation is on the mind of many government CIOs, so is cybersecurity and compliance. Orion offers multiple security systems to ensure agency security.

“Government CIOs have conflicting priorities — to bring transformative change to their organizations, while pursuing compliance-oriented priorities,” said Mr. Howard. “They will need to work constructively with other business leaders to agree how to balance risk and innovation to support digital transformation.”
