What’s it like to manage the IT infrastructure for one of the world’s elite fighting forces? Just ask Brigadier General, Kevin Nally, CIO of the US Marine Corps (USMC). As the person responsible for keeping the cyber-front of the USMC running smoothly, he knows all too well the challenges of being responsible for a high-demand global network that’s moving at the speed of tomorrow. While, in some instances he readily admits that his challenges are no different from that of other CIOs of other government agencies – tight budgets and defending infrastructure against never-ending APT seem to be common themes – the USMC has its own unique demands supporting personnel in the field and the need for high availability networks to match the Marine Corps’ reputation in the field.
In order to meet these stringent requirements, Brigadier General Nally is focused on breaking down silos within the organization by creating an IT steering committee and focusing its efforts of program rationalization to build the “office of the future” around cloud and mobile technologies. Currently operating pilot programs for both private clouds and bring your own device (BYOD), Nally’s office is not only making strides for the USMC, but for the entire Department of Defense by sharing best practices and lessons learned.
